6 months into a relationship with a man 15 years her senior, a woman can find she knows his opinions on everything and his feelings about nothing. He books the table and settles the argument about the route, and he makes the difficult phone call to his mother without being asked. Ask him what any of it costs him and the answer is a shrug. Composure and availability are separate qualities, and the first is easy to mistake for the second, particularly when it comes wrapped in the competence that age tends to bring.
The Behaviours Behind Emotional Availability
Emotional availability is a set of behaviours that can be observed and counted, which makes it a more testable quality than temperament. An available partner reports his internal state without being interrogated and stays in the room when a conversation turns uncomfortable. Faced with a partner in distress, he moves towards it.
“Is there no girl out there for me?”
That’s what they feared…

The opposite pattern is equally observable. Someone emotionally unavailable is physically present and relationally absent. He deflects with humour, changes the subject, or answers a question about feeling with a report about events. None of that looks like coldness in the early months. It looks like privacy, which is what most men who do it would call it themselves, and privacy is a defensible thing to want. The trouble comes when the door stays shut after the relationship has moved past the point where a shut door is reasonable.
Age and Emotional Regulation
Laura Carstensen’s work on socioemotional selectivity found that as a person’s sense of remaining time shortens, priorities move towards emotionally meaningful goals. Emotion regulation improves with age on that account, and older adults report fewer negative emotions and recover from them faster. A man of 50 has probably become better at managing what he feels than he was at 25. The caveat is that regulation and disclosure are different capacities, and improving at the first can reduce the pressure to develop the second. He no longer needs to talk about a bad week because a bad week costs him less than it used to. The partner across the table gets a calmer man and a quieter one.
Composure and Its Limits
Steadiness of that kind looks like security from the outside. Through the early months of dating an older guy it functions as security too, because he is unbothered by things that would have derailed a younger partner. He has money troubles in proportion, family troubles in proportion, and a realistic view of what he can change. The limit shows up the first time she needs something from the inside of him. A parent falls ill, a job ends, a pregnancy test comes back one way or the other, and she discovers that the man who handles everything has no practice at being handled. Competence at managing life is a poor predictor of willingness to be known by someone else.
Avoidant Attachment and Apparent Calm
Attachment research names the version of this that runs deeper. A dismissive avoidant attachment pattern forms early, often in the first 2 years, in response to a caregiver who treated need as an inconvenience. The adult version deactivates attachment needs rather than expressing them. He suppresses the cue and prioritises his own autonomy, and he describes himself with some sincerity as a low-drama person.

Living with an emotionally unavailable partner produces a specific set of symptoms in the other one. Loneliness while sitting in the same room comes first, then self-doubt, then a low-grade insecurity that survives every reassurance because reassurance is the thing being withheld. Therapists describe a related tell, which is the partner who engages with a problem cognitively and never emotionally. Tell him you felt dismissed during an argument and he replies that he cares about you, so the feeling does not follow. It is technically an answer, and it stops the conversation the question started.
Disclosure Rates Among British Men
British survey data gives the background rate. A 2025 YouGov survey of 5,000 adults for the counselling profession’s main association found that 29% of men have seen a therapist at some point, against 41% of women. Nearly half of men, 47%, believe counselling carries a stigma, against 38% of women. A third of men, 34%, called therapy self-indulgent unless the problem is serious, a view held by 17% of women. Fewer than half of men, 49%, said they were comfortable discussing their mental health with friends.
Those attitudes to therapy describe the pool a woman dating across a 15-year gap is selecting from. A man of 55 grew up before the vocabulary for any of this existed in ordinary conversation, and the habit of not using it has had decades to set. The same survey found that men who did go for therapy rated it helpful at the same rate as women, 73% each, so the reluctance sits at the door.
Early Tests of Availability
3 months is long enough to test for this, and the tests are ordinary ones. Ask him about a decision he regrets and listen for the difference between an account of what happened and an account of what it felt like. Watch what he does when you feel hurt in front of him, since an available man moves closer and an unavailable one rushes to solve the problem so the feeling stops.
Notice who else knows him. A man with 2 friends he speaks to honestly has somewhere to put things, and the woman he is seeing will not become his only emotional outlet. A man with none will stay closed, or hand her the whole weight of it, and both outcomes are worth knowing about early. Pew survey data puts the gap at 54% of women who turn to a friend for emotional support against 38% of men, and researchers on male friendships note that men tend to socialise shoulder to shoulder, around an activity, so the structures that hold those friendships together fall away easily once work and family take the time.
One more test costs nothing. Watch how he talks about his previous marriage or long relationship, particularly the ending. If he assigns every fault to the other person, he never examined the episode. Hearing his own contribution named, with no performance of contrition around it, means the examination happened, usually in his 40s and usually prompted by the divorce itself. That difference is visible across a single evening, and it predicts more about the next 5 years than anything he says about wanting to get it right this time.
The One Conversation to Have Early
Name the pattern out loud within the first few months, using the smallest possible version of the question. Ask him who he talks to when something goes wrong, and ask it while nothing has gone wrong. A man who has an answer is telling you the machinery exists. A man who says he handles things on his own has told you something equally useful, and you can then decide what you will live with in month 3, while the decision still costs little. The age gap makes that conversation more urgent, since a man who has managed alone for 50 years has more practice at it than one who has managed alone for 30.
