Happy couple laughing together on a genuine date, not a foodie call

“Foodie Call” Test: 4 Ways to Tell if She is Using You For Free Meals

September 23, 2026 //  by Ruby

Let’s talk about a scenario that happens to far too many good-intentioned men: You match with an attractive woman on an app. The banter seems fun, you book a table at a great local restaurant, and you pick up the $150 tab at the end of the evening. She smiles, says a polite “thank you,” and then… poof. Her texts slow to a crawl, or worse, she only resurfaces on a Friday night asking, “Where are you taking me this weekend?”

“Is there no girl out there for me?”
That’s what they feared…
Good-hearted men worried, doubted and almost gave up until they’ve read this proven 5-Step Plan:

Welcome to the world of the foodie call.

Just like a booty call uses someone for physical access, a foodie call uses a man purely for high-end dining, drinks, and entertainment. Both don’t genuinely have a genuine interest in the person they are using, and use manipulative tactics to get what they want. So unfortunately, if you’re a kind, generous, introverted gentleman who loves to treat people well, you make an easy target for this trap.

There is nothing wrong with traditional relationship dynamics where both partners explicitly agree on a provider dynamic (yes, there are women who are explicit at the start of that type of dynamic). But if you are looking for an equal partner, a woman who likes you for your humor, your heart, and your character. you need to know if her interest is genuine.

Here is how you can subtly, playfully test her intentions during the early stages of dating without coming off as cheap or accusatory.

This ebook has the ultimate plan for every good-intentioned man to find his true love, no matter the previous failures

Cherish this eBook: it contains more than a decade of proven wisdom from my vast experience with single men as a couples therapist, matchmaker, coach and previous eHarmony lead.

1. The Time-Window Strategy: Skip Dinner on Date One

The easiest way to weed out a foodie call happens before the date even begins. When you propose the first meetup, intentionally select a time slot and activity that does not center around a sit-down meal.

Aim for low-stakes connection windows:

  • Weekend Mornings: A casual coffee walk around 9:00 AM.

  • Mid-Afternoons: Grabbing iced matcha or boba between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM.

  • After-Work Happy Hours: Meeting for a quick beverage at 5:00 PM.

  • Post-Dinner Drinks: Meeting at a relaxed lounge around 8:30 PM.

Pick an environment that encourages conversation! Strolling through a local botanical garden, checking out an art market, or sitting at a quiet cafe.

The Test: How does she respond to a low-cost, conversational invitation? A woman who genuinely wants to meet you will happily accept because the environment allows you to talk. The right woman doesn’t see the food as a prize, but looks forward to the opportunity to get to know you more.

A foodie call will often attempt to redirect the plan toward dinner, show passive-aggressive hesitation, or unmatch you entirely. If she disappears because you offered coffee instead of steak, consider it a victory that saved you time and $100+.

2. The “Next Time” Verbal Probe

Let’s say you grab coffee or drinks, you have a great conversation, and you decide to pay the bill. She offers a polite “thank you.”

This is your moment to run a quick reciprocity check. Smile, keep your tone warm and lighthearted, and say:

“My pleasure! You can grab the drinks on our next round.” (Or, “No worries at all—you’ve got dessert next time!”)

Notice her immediate, unscripted reaction:

  • The Green Light: She doesn’t flinch. She flashes an easy smile and says, “Deal, it’s on me!” She views your connection as a two-way street.

  • The Red Light: Her face freezes, she laughs awkwardly, or she looks visibly annoyed.

You can also drop this test over text after the date wraps up. If she messages you saying, “Thanks for the great evening!”you can reply, “I really enjoyed it too! You’re on dessert duty next time we hang out!” A high-value woman will lean right into the playful banter. A woman looking for a meal ticket will often ghost after that text or act entitled, like below:

With this specific scenario, my client went on dates with this woman where no where was mentioned she hoped and expected for a man to pay for everything or that she doesn’t have any money at all (which, is a red flag in itself…how is she independent at all?)

3. The Curiosity Check: Does She Care About Your Core?

If you genuinely prefer dinner dates because you feel more relaxed in a restaurant setting, pay close attention to what she focuses on during the meal.

Ask her directly:

“I’m curious! what was it on my profile that made you want to say yes to this date?”

  • The Vague Deflection: “Oh, you just seemed really nice and sweet,” followed quickly by talking about restaurants she wants to try, trips she wants to take, or asking what neighborhood you live in. She is sizing up your lifestyle, not your personality.

  • The Intentional Answer: “I loved how passionate you sounded when talking about your work, and you seemed like someone who has a really grounded, funny perspective on life.”

A woman who likes you for you will actively inquire about your personal story, your upbringing, and your passions. A foodie call treats the date like a solo dining experience with background commentary. She’d rather talk about the experiences you’ve had and the places you two will try next.

4. The Digital Investment Test Between Dates

A woman using you for dinner reservations will invest the absolute bare minimum effort between your outings. She will send sparse, low-effort texts to keep you hooked just enough to lock in the next plan.

To test her genuine interest, switch communication mediums:

  • Send a 20-second voice note sharing a quick, funny moment from your afternoon.

  • Give her a brief, spontaneous phone call after work to chat for five minutes.

A woman who likes you will welcome the chance to hear your voice and connect on a personal level. If she consistently avoids calls, ignores voice notes, and only resurfaces to confirm reservation details, you are dealing with a dining customer, not a romantic prospect.

Protect Your Energy and Your Wallet

You work hard for your life, and your generosity should be reserved for someone who values your presence far more than the restaurant you choose. You never need to be rude or confrontational when a woman doesn’t pass one of these tests. if a woman shows clear foodie call behavior, simply wish her well, state that your dating intentions don’t align, and gracefully move on.

Save your seat across the table for someone whose face lights up simply because she gets to spend an hour talking to you.
