Let’s talk about a quiet epidemic currently circulating through modern dating apps: the “foodie call.”

That’s what they feared…

Most of us are familiar with the concept of a booty call, someone reaching out purely for late-night physical intimacy with zero intention of building a future. A foodie call is the culinary equivalent: a date who accepts your invitation, laughs at your jokes, and lets you order three courses plus cocktails, all while knowing deep down that she has zero romantic interest in you.
As a dating coach for thoughtful, introverted, and good-intentioned men, my inbox is filled with stories of gentlemen who planned an incredible evening, paid a $180 dinner bill, and were met with polite radio silence the next morning.
Here is my message to you: Your kindness, your hard-earned money, and your emotional energy are precious.Wanting to treat a woman is wonderful, masculine, and gentlemanly…provided you are treating someone who values you, not just your reservations.
If you suspect you’re dealing with someone who sees you as a free restaurant voucher, keep an eye out for these five unmistakable red flags across every stage of the dating process.
This ebook has the ultimate plan for every good-intentioned man to find his true love, no matter the previous failures

Sign 1: The Shallow, Ultra-Fast Date Agreement
When you match with someone on an app like Hinge or Bumble, natural chemistry usually takes a little bit of banter to establish. You exchange thoughts on your favorite weekend spots, share a laugh, and gradually build momentum toward an in-person meeting.
With a foodie call, that build-up is virtually absent:
-
Her text responses are short, surface-level, and light on personal questions. But! She’ll hook you in with her expressive use of emojis, and interested cute tone.
-
Her bio and conversational topics heavily center around being a “major foodie” or constantly wanting to visit trendy spots.
-
The moment you suggest meeting up, even after just three brief messages, she enthusiastically says yes.
Why the sudden enthusiasm? Because she doesn’t need to know who you are to know that she wants dinner on Friday night. As long as you seem like kind, sweet guy (which, you are!), she’ll happily go eat with you. See an example below of a woman discussing her detailed interest… of food.

Sign 2: The Gourmet Itinerary
Watch what happens the moment a date is on the table! A woman who is curious about you will usually say something collaborative like “I’d love that! What neighborhood works best for you?” or happily accept the location you provide with no resistance, even if it’s a bookstore. See the below example:

A foodie call, however, immediately takes over the venue selection with a specific, often expensive wishlist:
“Oh, have you been to that new rooftop sushi spot in the Gaslamp? I’ve been dying to try their tasting menu!”
Notice the focus: the excitement isn’t about meeting you; it’s about crossing an upscale restaurant off her personal bucket list on your dime.

Sign 3: The “Coffee Pivot” Pushback
This is one of the easiest ways to filter out someone’s true intentions before spending a single dollar. If she suggests an expensive restaurant, propose a low-stakes alternative:
“I’d love to check that out down the road! For our first hangout, let’s grab an afternoon matcha and take a walk around the park instead.”

Her reaction will tell you everything:
-
The Right Woman: Will happily agree because her goal is to have an opportunity to simply to get to know you, and see if there’s a connection there.
-
The Foodie Call: Will push back by giving a reason to pivot or using subtle guilt: “What? You won’t be hungry?” or “I’m a foodie, I really prefer dinner dates!” If you hold firm on an activity date, she will often suddenly become “busy” or stop replying altogether (we caught her, good riddance).

Sign 4: The Silent Bill Stare
Let’s assume you do choose a restaurant for dinner. If you prefer meal dates because it puts you into a more romantic mood, then it’s absolutely okay! The priority is for you to be a date environment where you can get to know her while feeling comfortable enough to build chemistry. The food is great, the conversation flows decently, and the server drops the bill on the table.
Watch her nonverbal cues carefully:
-
The Entitled Reaction: She completely ignores the folio. She doesn’t reach toward her bag, doesn’t pause her story, and simply waits expectantly for you to pull out your card. She treats your payment as an assumed obligation.
-
The High-Value Reaction: She notices the bill, pauses (may even look at it), and expresses genuine appreciation. Even if she hopes the man to treat, she will warmly say, “Thank you so much, are you sure?” or immediately offer: “Let me at least grab dessert or the valet!”
There is a huge energetic difference between a woman who feels entitled to your wallet and a woman who genuinely appreciates your generosity. Cause again, as a woman myself who appreciates a man who treats a woman, it’s not about getting away with not paying for a date. It’s about treating out the right woman who genuinely likes you.
Sign 5: The “Next Spot” Follow-Up Text
After the date wraps up, a foodie call wants to keep the perks coming. She will invest the bare minimum in digital communication to keep you on the hook.
Her follow-up text will usually look like this:
“Had such a nice time tonight! Next time we should definitely check out that French bistro downtown.”
Notice the pattern? She isn’t asking about your upcoming week, sending a thoughtful voice memo, or showing curiosity about your passions. She is simply dropping a breadcrumb to secure her next complimentary dining experience until she finds another target.

If She’s Showing the Signs
If you spot these signs, make sure to test if they are actually a foodie call by following my steps here. Just because she shows these signs above doesn’t mean she’s a confirmed foodie call (sometimes, there are women who are just not texters, and that’s okay!) So before you chalk her up as a red flag, make sure to follow my 4 tests to spot if she’s truly using you.
And if she is a confirmed foodie call, making it pretty obvious? You never need to get angry or cause an awkward scene. Simply recognize that her values and your values do not align. Send a polite, clean closing text:
“Hey Sarah, I enjoyed our conversation tonight, but I get the sense we’re looking for different relationship dynamics. Wishing you all the best!”
Save your resources for the woman whose face lights up not because of where you took her, but because she gets to spend an evening in your company.
